Hays was a true pastor, particularly with the clergy in his orbit. My dad always felt supported and recognized by Hays. There was always the "Harv, how are you doing?" calls and they weren't just perfunctory. He REALLY wanted to know the story.

My wife told me that the difference between my mom and dad was Mom was all about small talk. She would ask how you were and it wouldn't matter what you said.

"With your dad, when he asks about you he really means it."

That's how Hays rolled. He was tuned in to people.

Thank you for your words, Mike. I would not be a priest without Hays, either. He was one of a kind.

What an incredibly beautiful tribute to your father/mentor/spiritual guide. It helps to explain the incredible priest you have become. You are part of his great legacy. I sit with you in your grief, my brother. May you find blessed assurance that God is with you there, too.

Mike, I know how much pain you must be in right now because of the loss of this man who was important to you, but I also know how much gratitude and happiness you must feel when you think about how committed he was to you and how accurately and patiently he listened to you. I will be carrying you in my thoughts and in my prayers during this difficult time.
